What to check before paying for an imported vehicle

Verify the vehicle's identity, not just the photos

Photos can be recycled from a completely different vehicle. Ask for the VIN or chassis number and cross-check it against the documents you're shown, the engine number, and where possible a manufacturer or dealer record. A seller who's reluctant to share this is a red flag on its own.

Check mileage against condition

Low mileage on a vehicle that shows heavy wear on the pedals, seat, and steering wheel is a mismatch worth questioning. Odometer figures alone don't tell the full story, look at wear patterns together with the number.

Ask for accident and service history

A clean-looking vehicle can still have had major bodywork after a collision. Ask directly whether the vehicle has been in an accident, and request whatever service or maintenance records exist. Gaps in the history aren't automatically disqualifying, but they should factor into your price negotiation.

Get an independent mechanical inspection where possible

Before final payment, a third-party inspection, even a basic one, is the single most reliable way to catch problems that photos and descriptions won't reveal: engine condition, transmission health, suspension wear, and hidden rust.

Confirm the title and ownership documents

Make sure the name on the title matches the seller, or that the seller can clearly explain the chain of ownership if it doesn't. Ask about any liens or encumbrances before you commit funds.

Benchmark the price

Compare the asking price against similar listings for the same make, model, year, and mileage. A price that's meaningfully below market for no clear reason is worth extra scrutiny, not automatic excitement.
