How to tell an authentic luxury watch from a fake before you buy
A few checks that catch most counterfeits, before you commit to a purchase.
Weight is a real signal
Genuine luxury watches are made from solid precious metals or high-grade steel and have a noticeable heft. A watch that feels unusually light for its size is worth extra scrutiny, counterfeiters routinely cut corners on materials to save cost.
Listen to the movement
A genuine mechanical watch has a smooth, near-silent sweeping second hand. A second hand that ticks in visible, audible jumps usually points to a quartz movement inside a case designed to look mechanical, a common tell in counterfeits of mechanical models.
Check the details under magnification
Font weight and spacing on the dial, the crispness of engraving on the case back, and the finish on the crown and clasp are all places where counterfeits tend to show their limits. Genuine pieces have crisp, consistent lettering, blurry or uneven text is a red flag.
Verify the serial number
Most reputable manufacturers engrave a unique serial number on the case, and many offer a way to verify it. A missing, scratched-off, or unverifiable serial number is a serious warning sign, not a minor detail to overlook.
Ask about papers and provenance
Original box, warranty card, and purchase documentation don't guarantee authenticity on their own, but their absence, especially on a piece being sold as new or barely used, should prompt more questions, not fewer.
Buy from a source that stands behind what it sells
The single biggest protection against buying a fake is who you buy from. A seller who's transparent about sourcing and willing to answer detailed questions is a far better sign than one who rushes you to pay.
